Talk to Strangers: Do it
Read time: 5 min
Does the title go against everything you've been told when you were younger?? Yeah, me too.
From one of my favorite YouTuber channels, YES Theory, their famous slogan is: "strangers are friends we just haven't met yet."
Think about your current best friend. You started out as strangers! Sometimes it's just about reaching out for a small conversation in order to make a connection.
For me, some of those conversations have led to incredible friendships. Others have been small, shared moments that have impacted myself and others. All have contributed to how I experienced a city, learned something new, or reflected on myself.
My first true experience was on a trip back from Brussels to Paris. My friend and I had took a OUI bus, and we started chatting with someone from Romania. He ended up becoming one of my good friends, and whenever we're in the same country or city, we meet up!
A good way to start is to talk to shop vendors and servers! Now you're probably not having long convos, because they're working and have other customers, but you can ask about if they know any local places you must visit etc. They're often friendly, because they want to share what they know about their city!
One of my first solo trips was life changing. One of the reasons being, because I talked to strangers.
In Budapest, when I ate at the Central Market Hall, I chatted with a shop owner about some places I should visit, some local specialities, and the meaning behind their traditions!
On another solo trip to Toulouse, France I stopped by a crêpe stand, and ended up chatting with the worker and a couple strangers for over an hour and a half!! We talked about life, traveling, and things to do in Toulouse. We might not have become best friends, but we shared contact info and still keep in touch. Plus, it became a memorable part of my trip and how strangers could find commonalities and connect.
It's not as scary as you'd think!
Like I mentioned YES Theory truly does produce great content that shows how awesome the human connection can be. I strongly encourage you to binge watch their videos like I did hehe;) I thought this video summarized it pretty well to show how kind people can be to each other.
BE SAFE and smart, but say YES next time you get the chance to meet someone new and have a great discussion. Who knows, your next conversation could lead to a meaningful friendship, job opportunity, or a chance to learn something new!
We can't be afraid of others in this world. It puts up walls instead of connecting and bringing us together. We're more alike than we think.
bisous,
Lyndi
