3 essential day trips near Geneva
Ok, a bit of a trek from Geneva, but I started my trip in Paris!
Paris: Oct. 20-22
First stop? CHIPOTLE ! I missed it so much...maybe even more than the friends I saw;) But after that craving was filled, I strolled around some of my favorite spots: outside the Louvre at night, Palais royal, galerie Vivienne, the Latin quarter and loved seeing that beautiful, fall foliage near the Eiffel !
On chilly Friday night, I met up with some friends for some cozy fondue in the Latin quarter ! ^^ I also learned a "French game"..that is, if you drop something from your skewer into the fondue, you are dared to do something ! I was quite good and didn't drop anything; however, my poor friend dropped more than 5 pieces of bread:) Needless to say, each time she dropped something we heard, "Merde!"
Annecy: Oct. 24
I took a day trip to the cute town of Annecy. It's called the "Venice of the Alps," and with all the canals, I understand why ! It's a cute stop if you're ever near by. It's rather small; so I would only recommend a day, but it has some gorgeous canals, Europe's shortest river the Thiou, a castle, a beautiful lake and mountain view, as well as le pont des amours (Lover's Bridge). There are lots of cute restaurants on the canal fairly reasonably priced, but you can always grab a crêpe or panini if you want to keep strolling. Annecy - def recommend !
Thonon-les-Bains: Oct. 27
Yes I live here, but I haven't checked out the market yet. So I went in the morning, and it did NOT disappoint ! It was so much bigger than I expected. It was streets and streets full of lots of fresh, colorful produce, meats, regional specialties of Haute Savoie (region) along with clothes and knick knacks.
Geneva: Oct. 29
A friend who works in Geneva showed me around this international city for the day ! When we first drove in, I felt like I was still in France but with glimpses of Germany or Belgium - fun ! The architecture reminded me of Germany, but still some Haussmann influence.
It was a little cloudy and cold, but that didn't stop us from exploring an indoor market, buying traditional Swiss chocolate using Swiss francs, and strolling through the Old City and by the lake.
I was really looking forward to touring the United Nations, but we unfortunately found out it's closed Saturdays in the fall/winter. So instead saw the iconic flags and the outside...that just means I'll have to make another trip to Geneva ! ^^
